image001Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.

The scheme encourages schools right across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel and in so doing, improve the health and well-being of children and young people.

Every school in England can participate in Modeshift STARS for free. On completion of an application for Modeshift STARS, schools will automatically have a brand new national standard School Travel Plan.

As of June 2015, 50 local authorities representing just over 10,000 schools in England are signed up to Modeshift STARS

At St Martin’s we have been a part of this scheme for the last two years. We achieved the Modeshift Bronze Travel award in July 2014 and are currently working towards the Silver award.

In recognition of the work that we have done to increase the numbers of pupils walking, cycling or scooting to school, we were awarded the Luton Sustainable Award. This has led to an appearance on the BBC’s Look East programme in which our pupils and parents talk about some of the initiatives that we have put in place.
