St. Martin de Porres Primary School

Chess Club

We are fortunate to have a chess club in school, which is supported by one of the family workers together with a volunteer who is an experienced chess player.   Chess often serves as a bridge – bringing together children of different ages, races and genders in an activity they can enjoy together.

The aims of the club are to develop the children’s knowledge in the exciting game, including the tactics, understanding and ability to forward think their moves.  There is growing support from the government for the idea of putting the game on the national curriculum.

We hope to prepare the children to enter local competitions during the next academic year, playing others from schools around the borough.
